Sarah: An excerpt for you....

THIS WORK IS COPYRIGHTED! NO STEALING!!

Remi sat straight up, her long hair flying about her shoulders and back in a dark, curly mess. She looked around frantically, trying to remember how the heck she had ended up on a bus, and why her stomach was growling violently.

As she focused her breathing, she became aware of three things all at once.

One, she wasn’t cold anymore. Instead, she was in what seemed to be blistering heat. Her leather jacket was soaked through with sweat, so she quickly peeled it off, along with her sweater, leaving her in just a white t-shirt.

Two, the bus was still moving at a steady speed, maybe going a little fast for what she knew should be the speed limit. She could no longer sense things like the brake being pressed, which seemed to calm her down.

Everything that had made her feel better faded when she looked at the front of the bus, scanning it for passengers and, mainly, the driver from last night. This was the third thing.

The driver’s seat was vacant.

She ran for the front of the bus, hoping she was seeing things. But when her feet carried her to the seat, she was disappointed that she had not. It was true. The driver was no longer in his seat. The steering wheel swerved like someone was driving, the pedals even moved, but there was no one there.

“Oh my God!” She screamed, turning and scanning the bus hysterically. Her gray eyes caught sight of a man toward the back, slumping against the window, sleeping soundly.

She ran quickly, taking in her surroundings outside the bus on the way. She paused once, realizing why she was so hot. All around her was sand and sun, with only a patch of grass growing almost out of eye sight.

Remi shook the man violently, yelling at him. “Get up, gut up, get up!”
